Map details or notes

Post by datashuttle »

Great map app.

Suggestion: Some maps have details that are needed. For example, the Cal topo land management layer shows color-coded public land space, but not key data to the colored areas.

My guess is that data may be available via API call. If not, then add the ability to add some notes data for each layer, and let the user add their own details.

The details are available via the associated map web site, but that is far from convenient when outside of internet service.

Hi,
Unfortunately map keys are rarely available in a format accessible from the application.
For some maps (when a key is available), you can click on the maps menu -> Displayed maps -> Long press a map and select "Map key". For example the "OSM Standard Carto" does have a key.
I don't know where to find the Caltpo map keys, if you know please tell me I'd happy to add them.

Okay from that I understand your limitations. However, if you go here: https://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=45.1704 ... =mbt&a=sma
You will see the Caltopo web interface and the land management selected. The right hand "Map Layers" option for "Public Lands" shows a color text grid for the areas of public land space. If there is no indication of what the coloured areas mean on the associated map, your just guessing what they are in Alpine Quest. Great to have the maps, but without a key, they are marginally useful.

In this particular case, I now have them figured out, but, alas, no way do edit them into the Land Management layer. That would be good.

Caltopo is a particular case, they don't provide maps and keys in a standardized way, it seems that the "land management" names are added by hand by the author, something not possible to do here.
In the community maps list, if you select the "USA Protected Areas (PADUS)" maps, you can display the "Federal Management Agencies" map, and you'll have a key explaining all color codes, because here it's a standard map server with a standard map key.
If you want a better integration with Caltopo, the best way will always be to use the Caltopo app.

Edit: an improvement would be to be able to include images in the maps descriptions with the details for each map, unfortunately it would require too much time (there are hundred of maps available) and right now I just can't.

Thanks for the response.

I do understand the time commitment as I'm a software engineer myself. That said, you have a great app here, and I expect it to only get better.

Thanks also for the PADUS maps reference. They indeed have a key, but it's only reachable if one has internet access via the web link. That is, of course, of no use outside of internet access.

Please consider a user editable notes/details option for a map or layer in the three ellipse options.

Hi François,
About map keys.
Reacting to "an improvement would be to be able to include images in the maps descriptions with the details for each map, unfortunately it would require to much time (there are hundreds of maps available)"
What if you put mapkey standerd in the displayd maps menu, above details. Pressing map key would lead to a question mark that would lead to the manual. The text, something like if you want the mapkey find it on the internet, sent us a link we'll manage from there. Might take a while to next update. Take the image and put it in the right place allready there.
Only hoping this could knock of one of the request list, bring the workload down for a bit.
If useless, just delete.
Thanks for A.Q. Its a gem.
Friendly greetings
Jos

Hi Jos,
This is already the case.
For example if you long press the "Standard carto" map (from the OSM maps group), you have an item above "Details" called "Map key" that sends you to the online page of the map key.
The problem is that only a few maps have a key, and when it's available it's in various format: image, webpage, pdf file, etc.
So it makes it difficult to have those map keys displayed from the app...

Yes but the application has hundred of maps, imagine how long it would take to make all those screenshots...

Yes you are right there.
Is it an option that users who want a particular mapkey search the internet, make those screenshots, send them, and you put/ copy? them in a allready predefine space.

Hi François,
Forgot to mention.
The only reason i was thinking of this aproach is that the amount of work is verry spread out over a long period of time. Jus every now and then put a few screenshots in the right place.
Tick one of the request list without the Herculas task of you alone doing it.
Friendly greetings Jos
