[closed] Compare... [maps] option

Post by alexlong »

Hi and thanks for the new feature in the last beta – Compare ... [maps on the screen].
It's really a very useful feature! I have some ideas about it. First I have discussed them in 4pda Russian forum.

1. Compare... to rename to Compare maps, the reason is below.
2. Displayed maps – to add a new button "Compare maps" close to "Available maps" and "Save as favourite" buttons. The red arrow indicates where. Sorry for the Russian screen.

The new button opens a Compare / Compare maps section where I can check / uncheck maps for comparison and press OK, i.e. it saves time just like "Available maps" and "Save as favourite" buttons. The Compare (or better Compare maps) menu item stays as it is in the menu list.
3. To add a new custom menu button called "Compare maps" (Sorry for Russian).

This custom menu button should also open Compare maps section but only the last one with the slider.

The difference between #2 and # 3 is that in # 2 I have to (I can) choose maps I want to compare and in # 3 I just compare the maps already chosen i.e. it works as a Fast waypoint – I just press the custom menu button and immediately I see a window with the slider.
The application should remember the configuration of the Dispalyed maps (the sort order, opacity, contrast etc.) + the maps I shoose for comparison (check sign). The custom menu button "Compare maps" works as a fast button to open a final window with the compare slider.
4. The application should select all displayed maps. Now the application by default does not select the upper map in Compare window and if I want to compare all maps on the screen I have to manually select the upper one.
5. To change the order of the maps in the Compare window.
The displayed maps are seen from top to bottom as
1
2
3

If a open the Compare window the maps from top to bottom are seen as
3
2
1
I do not think it is logical.

So in brief:
Compare → Compare maps
A new "Compare maps" button in the Dispayed map window*
A new "Compare maps" custom menu button*
* these buttons open different windows

Thanks in advance

Hi Alex and sorry for the delay.
The compare maps is a cool tool but it's only for advanced users so right now I don't want to make it too much visible. I think it's good if it's only available when you long press a map.
I think I understand what you want, a way to save and recall a compare maps setup.
I think using a custom menu item is not the right idea, it's too complex to and you'll end with different buttons called the same and doing different stuff.

Here is what I suggest: once you've selected some maps to compare and see the slider view, you'll see a "Save as favorite" button. You'll be able to save this setup like any favorite set, but when you select it, it will directly open the compare tool. This is a simple and clear way to save/restore quickly compare maps setups.
I'll soon publish a beta with this. I hope this is what you want.

Also, I don't know if you noticed but in version 2.2.6, I've:
- Inverted the maps order (so #5 is done);
- Improved the maps that are selected by default when you select "Compare": if you have layers over maps, by default only the layers will be selected, otherwise everything will be selected (so #4 is ok).

It works, thanks.
There is a nuance - the "Compare" icon is poorly visible. Below is test Favorites:

Is there a way to make it visible?

I have one more suggestion.

If you open a Favorite with a comparison maps, then you work, close the application, and then open it again, you see the main page with the maps that are currently on the screen (2 maps in my case on the screen added as layers).

It seems to me that in this case it would be logical if the application would start with a slider window because earlier I opened a Comparison Favorite.

One small suggestion not concerning the Compare option...
Is it possible to highlight the bookmark that is currently open?
Ya+Tom is open now:

You're right concerning the restore of the compare tool, it would be more logical, but right now the application does only display the main map when starting.
And in a way, it's good like this because some people when lost in tools and feature, can just close and reopen the application to get back to the map with nothing. This is reassuring.

I'll see if I can make the icon more visible. I don't want to make it too much visible too.

And concerning the current favorite set in bold, this is exactly the request that have been made here (in french).
While working on this, I realized it's more complicated than I expected, because you can change so much settings in the favorite sets (for each map, opacity, brightness, contrast, negative color, blending mode, erase color...).
If I display a set, and only change the opacity of one map of 1 percent, is it still the same current set? Should it still be in bold?
I don't give up, but it will be for later.

Hi, François.
I remembered that discussion viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3906 :-)
I have even tried to write Français.
Do it as you consider it correct, you know better.

Hi Alex,
I've just published version 2.2.7.r6537 with:
- Compare icon over favorite set more visible;
- Currently selected favorite set is now highlighted.
