Setting up External Bluetooth GPS

Post by geoffers »

Hi - I would like to try to use AQ with an external TomTom Bluetooth GPS, but not sure how to configure AQ to work with this device.

I have successfully paired my phone with the GPS (appears in paired devices as "TomTom Wireless GPS"), but I can't see how to get AQ to talk to it - probably some simple setting, but not immediately obvious.

On my PC I can pair with the TomTom, then (using Memory Map) can see that it has successfully accessed 7 or more satellites, and gives me a fix no problem.

The GPS device settings are Manufacturer="NMEA" - serial-port=Com3: baud-rate=9600; parity=none; data-bits=8; stop-bits=1

Cheers, Geoff

Hi,
You won't be able to use your bluetooth GPS directly from AQ.
What you'll have to do is to use a "wrapper" that will get locations from the GPS and forward them to the "passive" location provider that you'll be able to select in AQ (from the Localisation details panel).
Here is a thread talking about that (it's quite simple don't worry)
Let me know if you need more help,
Best regards

Wow - thanks for your quick response.

All makes sense now (in fact I'd already selected "External Locations" under GPS localisation, and was actually getting a fix under Source=passive, but had assumed that was through network geo-location). I was doing this all from my sofa, so the fix wasn't moving, thus it was not immediately obvious :D

Love the app - been using the Lite version for several months - just upgraded to the fully functional paid version

Cheers, Geoff

I've now found an even better solution, which may be worth adding to your online help.....
  • Download Bluetooth GPS (by GG Moblab)
  • Select paired device and connect
  • Make sure that "Enable mock GPS provider" is checked in its settings
  • Select "Outdoor GPS" in AQ - it now thinks it is using the device's onboard GPS
Bluetooth GPS has a great interface which allows you to see which satellites are being accessed etc :P

Thanks for the details.
However are you sure that the locations are really coming from your bluetooth device and not from the internal GPS?
