Advice on using localisation & tracking

Post by CRider »

Hi,
I'm just wondering if using both the localisation and the tracking is not too battery consuming.
Obviously, the tracking uses periodically the GPS.
Does the localisation use only the GPS when the app is visible ? (ie the GPS is not used when the device is sleeping)
Does the localisation reuse the GPS measure from the tracking background service ?
Thanks,
Regards.

Hi and sorry for this late answer.
This is a very interesting question. Hope I will be precise enough.

Battery consumption:
When the Tracker is running, using the GPS Localisation won't use extra battery (at least for the GPS itself, because it will however use a very little more battery for the current location display on map, extra screen refreshes, etc, but it's negligible).

Sleeping application:
When AlpineQuest is no more displayed to the user (i.e. the application is sent in background, another application is displayed over it, the screen is turned off, ...), the GPS Localisation is temporary turned off, in order that the application doesn't use any battery while not being displayed. This feature can be disabled in the AlpineQuest settings if you want to keep an immediate up-to-date location after turning on the screen again. Note that it doesn't concern the GPS Tracker, which will still use the GPS chip if running.

Concerning the update period:
The GPS Localisation and Tracker share the same update period (if you change the period in one configuration window, it's also changed in the other). By keeping a synchronized rate, it helps using the GPS as little as possible (that's no more true is another application is using the GPS with a different period at the same time).
