Store google maps for offline use

Post by tombell »

Hi

Is there a program that can create offline map from Google Maps to use with AlpineQuest?
I have recently switched from iPhone to Android and I had a couple of iPhone hiking apps, where you could select
a part of an area from Google maps and it would store it locally, for offline use

Does AlpineQuest offer something like that? Even, with the help of 3rd party software?

Thanks

Hi,
You can access Google Maps right in AlpineQuest (using AlpineQuest built-in online maps). All maps displayed are stored and then available off-line.
You can also use older versions of MobileAtlasCreator (try the 1.8 or 1.9) which can create AlpineQuest AQM maps.
Have a look at the online help.
Best regards.

Great

What is the cache size for storing online maps? Do you cache different zoom levels, as I change the zoom levels?

Thanks

Hi,
The size is only limited by the size of the SD memory card. And yes all levels are stored.
Note that you can use map layers to store multiple maps at one time.
You can have a look at the folder /alpinequest/cache to see the used size.
Best regards

Greetings, and thank you for AlpineQuest.

Related to this question...

I may be confused, but when I zoom into an OpenStreetMap Mapnik map, allowing time for each zoom level to cache, then zoom out to the default world map and zoom in again it says "There are no offline maps at the center position". I have not moved from the center position, only zoomed in, zoomed out, then in again, and no maps were cached. Are "Mapnik" maps not cached? What am I doing wrong?

Thank you

Hi,
All online maps are stored (OpenStreetMap maps, Google maps, community maps).
I agree that it may be confusing, but the message tells you that you dont have offline maps, meaning no maps pre-created and stored on your SD card (like .aqm or .qct maps).
Online maps (even cached) are not considered as offline maps.
To check if your map is correctly stored, you can turn the data/wifi and see if the area is still displayed again.
If this is not the case, check that:
- the storing mode is not set to 'none' on the AlpineQuest preferences;
- you have space left on your sd card.
Let me know,
Best regards

Thank you very much for the explanation. As you suggested, I did test it by turning off data/wi-fi and found that the Google maps had indeed cached. This makes me feel MUCH more comfortable about relying on cached maps.

I'm using a Nexus 7 tablet with no sd card slot...How can I store my maps that I've created in MOBAC on the internal memory of the tablet?

Hi,
I think you should be able to plug your tablet in your PC as an USB mass storage, and so browse your internal memory just like an external SD card.
Then locate the AlpineQuest map folder and paste your maps in it.
Let ke know if it works.

Actually you can use any folder, and then from the AlpineQuest landmarks explorer click on the top address bar to locate the folder you used.
Anyway if it works now that's good.

Hi, first I want to congratulate you for the program and forum.

I am a biologist and work with primates in tropical forests. Some time ago I was looking for an application with this storage function of the google earth images for offline use. Will test the AlpineQuest in my next fieldwork.

Once I get back from traveling, I will comment on my experience with the app.

See you soon!
