GLACIAL CATCHMENTS: METADATA

Three databases have been merged to give this file:

an amended Randolph Glacier Inventory file (Bliss), which covers most of the islands around Antarctica.

a detailed analysis of Northern Peninsula (Graham Land) glacier catchments (Cook)

a new analysis of the catchments of the main Antarctic Ice Sheets and Palmer Land (Fretwell).

Glacier types are included in the Bliss data, but as these
are rather arbitrary for many areas of Antarctic they have now, as yet, been included in the other datasets. Details of this first dataset is covered in the original publication: https://doi.org/10.3189/2013AoG63A377

METHOD

The second and third datasets use the same methodology to compute catchments but have different granularity. Each is based upon ArcGIS hydrological analysis.

Catchments are constructed by dividing the outflow (in this case the grounding line) into discrete parts and using a flow-direction grid to calculate which parts of the ice-sheet flow to each outflow. The flow-direction is in turn calculated from a detailed surface elevation grid. In the case of the Cook dataset this surface grid is a specific 100m detailed DEM based on ASTER data, reference: https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-4-129-2012. The Fretwell analysis uses the new 1km Bedmap2 surface elevation dataset, reference: https://doi.org/10.5194/tc-7-375-2013

As the two datasets were constructed from different resolution data and were made for slightly different end products the detail of the datasets is slightly different; the Cook data divides the grounding line into many more catchments, this is possible as the area of interest of this data is the Northern Antarctic Peninsula (63 to 70 degrees south) where most ice is in the form of marine terminating valley glaciers.

The Fretwell dataset tends to have less discrete outlets. This is due to the terrain over the majority of the Antarctic where the coastline is mainly in the form of calving ice-cliffs that are not constrained by topography. Here discrete ice-streams have been identified using velocity data (Rignot, E., J. Mouginot, and B. Scheuchl (2011), Ice Flow of the Antarctic Ice Sheet, Science, doi 10.1126/science.1208336.) and the RAMP dataset (Jezek, K., and RAMP Product Team. 2002. RAMP AMM-1 SAR Image Mosaic of Antarctica. Version 2. Fairbanks, AK: Alaska Satellite Facility, in association with the National Snow and Ice Data Center, Boulder, CO. Digital media).

The nature of the Fretwell data, especially around headlands and ice piedmonts, breaks the catchments into fewer discrete parcels.

One point that should be noted of the methodology: It works from information at the grounding line. This results in some well known ice-streams being merged together, especially if they form a single ice-stream at the grounding line. Examples of this are the Mercer and Whillans Ice streams (formally Ice Stream A and Ice Stream B) that converge landwards of the grounding line and are a single entity at the point where they flow into the Ross Ice Shelf; for our dataset this is considered one catchment.

NAMING

Naming of glacier has been added in conjunction with the SCAR composite gazetteer; the largest glacier or feature has usually been used. In many areas especially those around the coast or around small headlands or drainage basins this field has been left blank.
