[resolved] Open topo download problems

Post by kennyb1 »

Hello, noob here.

I had no trouble downloading and accessing the raster maps for Spain recently, but on trying to download open topo maps for a walk in an area of the Cairngorms (Jock's Rd) I received over 1,000 (a thousand!) errors and the download took several hours for 30-50Mb, instead of the usual minute or less for that amount.

I have not been able to find any reference to these problems in the FAQ or Online help.

grateful for any suggestions.

cheers

Hi,
I think this is due to the time of the day you downloaded. The opentopomap is unfortunately often very busy and quite slow.
If you long press on the map with the error and select "Details", you'll get the name of the errors. It would be helpful for me to give you more info.

Thanks, I looked at the details and I see 3 headings: Information, Projection and Files.

However I dont see any reference to the errors which were produced as I downloaded.

Thanks Jos, any clues as to when that "right time" might be?

@kennyb1: you must long press a map while downloading an area. Go in the store area panel, where you see the download progress, then long press a map here.

Thanks, re "store area panel", is that via the "available maps" option in the "maps and layers" submenu on the app?

Hi kennyb1
Thanks Jos, any clues as to when that "right time" might be?

I think you need someone with more knowledge.
My quess is it depends on where you live. My second quess is try downloading when everybody else is at sleep. Early evening perhaps the worst time.
My experiance: sometimes fast, sometimes hopeless. So it's trial and error basicly.
Friendly greetings
Jos

OK, downloading was much faster just now, but still plenty errors:

Errors:
Reprocessed: 3919
Unreprocessed: 3783
Types:
7 x SocketTimeoutException
2275 x InvalidHttpCode: 404
9339 x Connect Exception

then a message on main screen: Process completed (87% error)

Hi again,
As of now I cannot access at all the https://opentopomap.org/ website, it may be stopped for maintenance.
Until it's available again the only workaround would be to use another map like the "Cycle/Hike" map for example.

Thanks, will the map downloaded with the errors work, once in the field and combined with a track?

Once in the field, the application will display everything that you can currently display right now (because everything displayed is stored for offline use).
ANd maps and tracks are not related at all.

When I was in Spain I received some .gpx tracks by email. I then downloaded maps through AlpineQuest, and while on the walks, the tracks magically appeared on the maps.

So I assumed there was some process whereby they are combined?

They are both displayed independently, you can display a track without map, a map without track, both, etc.
In the maps menu -> Displayed maps you can see which maps are currently displayed.
In the placemarks menu -> Displayed placemarks you can see which placemarks are currently displayed (tracks, but also points, area, etc.).
